Bangkok International Airport's name can be transliterated
and pronounced in any number of ways. The most common are "Soo-wah-nah-
bhum" and
"Soo-wah-nah-
phum". The "
i"
is silent and the "
v" is usually pronounced
as a western sounding "
w". But no
matter how you say it, Bangkok's International Airport presents
a striking image.
Besides a unique image, Suvarnabhumi has a checkered
past that started with restrooms that didn't work and cracks
in some runways. The last episode at Suvarnabhumi was the occupation
and subsequent closure created by the political protests of P.A.D.
That ordeal stranded upwards of 300,000 travelers for days.
- Distance from Bangkok city centers: 30-35 km
- Trave time (depending on traffic): from 40 minutes
- Taxi from Suvarnabhumi to Bangkok: Bt 350+ depending on use
of expressways
- Taxi to Don Muang: Bt ~300
While Suvarnabhumi Airport serves the vast majority of Thailand's
International flights into Bangkok, the older Don Muang Airport
is still active for domestic travel. So those travelers arriving
with onward domestic connections need to be sure of their departure
airport. Depending on the time of day, a taxi or limousine ride
between the two airports can be lengthy.
